Tester Thursdays: The Honest Company Honest Body Oil

November 29, 2012

Co-founder Jessica Alba has been receiving a ton of press lately for her clean home and body care line, The Honest Company. After becoming a mom, she became obsessed with ridding her home of those sneaky toxins found in your every day cleaning and beauty products (I suspect I’ll be the same way). Luckily for us, when she couldn’t find any acceptable alternatives, she decided to take matters into her own hands and start The Honest Company.

The Honest Company offers a great deal where  you can purchase a monthly subscription for 5 of your favorite products for $35.95 a month. Gilt City recently ran a great deal and I’d read great reviews about some of their products, so I bought a trial package which included their laundry detergent, dryer sheets, hand sanitizers and body oil.  Given my obsession with body oils, I was most excited to try their Honest Body Oil and it absolutely did not disappoint.

Immediately upon application, the first thing I noticed was the soft, summery scent of mandarin oil. I’m a huge fan of orange blossoms, so this was a very pleasant surprise. The oil itself is extremely light and absorbs quickly, making it ideal for application when I’m in a rush before work. But this doesn’t mean that it doesn’t get the job done, my skin is incredibly soft and supple all day (so much so that a girlfriend of mine kept touching my arms at dinner a couple weeks ago asking “how is your skin so soft?!”).

Given Alba’s affinity for clean products, it should be no surprise that every single (organic) ingredient is 100% recognizable: sunflower seed oil, jojoba oil, olive oil, coconut oil, mandarin oil and tamanu oil, making it a safe option for moms and their kids. Sound too good to be true? It gets better – a 4 ounce bottle is $9.95 (and a little goes a very long way)!

Available at The Honest Company.

Tester Thursdays: Duchess Marden Body Serum

October 10, 2012

It’s official – fall has arrived. (aka my apartment building just turned the heat on this week)

With hot air coming out of my vent 24/7 these days, my skin is much more prone to dryness. To tide me over until spring, I find myself reaching for my trusty black bottle of Duchess Marden’s Damascena Body Serum. Now don’t get me wrong – at $72 bucks a pop this stuff is absolutely NOT an everyday habit. But it is a very luxurious, ridiculously lovely serum that I love to slather on slowly when I’ve had a particularly stressful day. Since its so rich and pure (no GMOs, petrochemicals, parabens or preservatives), a couple of pumps goes a loooong way. So even though the bottle is only 6.7 ounces, you can definitely get a ton of mileage out of this product. Mine has lasted me a year!

Whenever I use this serum, I notice that the texture of my skin is noticeably improved. This should be a given with all body serums, but my skin is baby soft all day long.  At the same time, there is no greasy residue that dirties up my keyboard – my skin loves to drink it up so it absorbs quite quickly. Also – I’m much clumsier than I care to admit, so I can pick up some pretty random bruises. Luckily, I notice that lathering this on definitely helps the bruises disappear much more quickly.

But – warning to those who have more sensitive noses: this serum definitely has a fragrance personality – very rosy and herbal. However, the scent does fade after 20 mins or so and doesn’t seem to interfere with my perfume. Obviously, if you are not a fan of rose / herbal scents, stay away. I personally love the smell of roses, it reminds me of my big sister and is therefore very comforting to me.

Available on B-glowing.
